Ramadan 2011

Ramadan is going to arrive shortly.

Traditional Heritage in Dubai – Photo courtesy of Steve Rogers

According to tradition, its exact inception cannot be foreseen as it is determined by the moon phases which vary from time to time on the basis of several astronomic elements. Though the concerned date will be known only a few days before, it’s sure that it is going to start between the last days of July and the first ones of August with some variations in terms of hours or days due to the latitude of the numerous countries where the Holy Month is celebrated.

This year it will be particularly hard for Muslims as August is the hottest month of the year when temperatures in the UAE can reach 47°-48° C but it is important to emphasize that in the Emirates each and every space indoor is air conditioned thus giving everyone real wellbeing and making it possible to enjoy this period.

An indisputable advantage of spending a stay during Ramadan in Dubai is that rates significantly decrease; as a result you’ll succeed in accessing luxury accommodation at very affordable prices without any compromise in terms of quality. Equally appealing are restaurants, clubs, cinemas, arenas and every kind of outlet; food & beverage proposals are  rich in appeal thanks to several themed promotions to celebrate Iftar and, at the end of Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr: in fact, Islamic tradition includes a number of mouthwatering salty & sweet specialties which are well-worth tasting.

So, take a look at the competitive offers, packages and promotions available for Ramadan and you’ll discover a world of opportunities to be enjoyed.

Sometimes it’s not so easy to make a choice among a huge number of appealing hotels, especially in case it’s your first time in a multifaceted city like Dubai.

Dubai, the Golden City, as it is nicknamed, can offer you every kind of accommodation you could be looking for. This aims not at being a pure slogan but simply mirrors the availability of numberless hospitality faces inside the same territory thanks to the numerous cultures which melt and join in Dubai.

Would you like to spend your stay in a typically Arabian hotel whose atmosphere expresses the Arab history and traditions? Well, you’ll enjoy a great number of alternatives among the international hotel chains which take inspiration from local cultures and give birth to receptive structures deeply rooted in the place where they are. On the other hand, Dubai also boasts many small-medium hotels belonging to local enterprises which are mostly family-managed and offer truly Arabian architecture, atmosphere, food & beverage and entertainment (belly dance inclusive).

Alternatively, in case you’d love to stay in majestic, luxury hotels where amenities and facilities are conceived in the name of opulence and refinement then you’ll feel equally at ease among the outstanding hotels available in Dubai in the 5 star category: all the internationally renowned hotel chains are strongly active on the UAE tourist market. In that case you’ll experience an atmosphere which prevailingly tends to global standards thus ensuring high levels of comfort and exclusiveness.

In addition, you could be longing for a unique desert resort stays where life has totally different rhythms and surroundings play a core role in your activities. Well, the desert around Dubai is an astonishing mine of breathtaking resorts where you can live an experience which will never be confused with anyone else in your memories. They are luxury retreats offering an extremely wide range of services and amentities along with the opportunity of numerous tours throughout their environs. Frequently, they are structured in villas so that they turn out to be particularly ideal for couples looking for intimate, romantic stays…

Finally, for those seeking the utmost level of uniqueness there are several iconic resorts to be mentioned just like Burj Al Arab, Atlantis the Palm, Armani Hotel (inside Burj Khalifa) & Emirates Towers which all belong to Dubai’s skyline and global image all over the world.

Whatever kind of stay in Dubai you’ll choose be sure that the standards of comfort, services and amenities will constantly be at the top according to the concerned category and that among the most significant duties of every hotel management there is constantly customers’ satisfaction during and also after their stay.

Emiratis people are farsighted: how to transform a disadvantage like the hot summer time (up to 48° C) into a sought-after period which tourists from all over the world long for? Here you are: by means of a unique calendar of events under the same  motto: Dubai Summer Surprises - held in 2011 from 22 June to 31 July – has reached its 14th edition while enjoying a constantly growing success.

During the 10 weeks of DSS events are distributed and clustered into themes (i.e. Surprises) according to the target public (aged from 0 to 150 years…) and sponsored by Hotels, Shopping Malls, and Companies as a whole. Not to forget is Modhesh (Arabic for “unexpectedly surprising, amazing”) the nice mascot of DSS. What’s more, thanks to the fact that each and every venue in Dubai is air-conditioned you can absolutely forget what’s going on outside and enjoy the first-class events of your choice which are spread all over the city and the desert around too.

The 2011 programme leaves no space for disappointment: hot deals in lots of shopping malls & shops along with rewards just for shopping, exclusive discounted spa packages,  captivating giveaways through tons of competitions, live shows, concerts, exhibitions, fashion shows, performances… With special attention to Emirate’s history, culture and traditions.

As a result, visiting Dubai during Dubai Summer Surprises offers  the opportunity not only of great entertainment but also of getting in touch with UAE’s true quintessence. Activities such as visiting a Bedouin village in the desert close to an oasis, getting a typical Arabic henna painting, browsing around tents, tasting their mouthwatering BBQs and attending a belly dance show are definitely among the  must-do’s!

Just like most metropolises all over the planet Dubai has a very multifaceted personality which can impress very different aspects to your stay. Here are a few tricks to enjoy your days (or even weeks?) in the most pleasant way.

Your transfer from the airport to your hotel

We strongly advise to book it in advance as the Dubai International Airport is extremely wide; what’s more, in some hours it becomes very much traffic-congested though being organized in an excellent way. As a result, you could experience some trouble before finding a  taxi available for you due to the great amount of concurrent arrivals.

Your hotel

Hotels and Hotel Apartments are located everywhere in Dubai: from the waterfront to the desert through any intermediate area. When you book your accommodation make sure that it meets your requirements in terms of connections and distances from the places you are planning to visit as well as of quiet. Thanks to the Google Maps function (also available on mymedina.com) it is decidedly comfortable to check both the location and the distances of the hotels you are interested in. In case you are looking for tranquillity the only location we’d rather suggest to avoid is the Sheikh Zayed Road – the never ending huge road which connects the whole city and also goes far beyond – as it becomes very chaotic during peak hours and consequently it would frequently take much time to reach your hotel.

Going around

Dubai boasts an unbelievable number of must-see places which are undoubtedly memorable and well-worth seeing as well.

Wherever you decide to go there are a few rules to be considered in order to establish a pleasant relation with the locals and residents who are generally very friendly and welcoming. As a Muslim-majority country the Arab Emirates expect from tourists that their religious customs are  respected just like they do with the other beliefs. From the practical point of view there is a couple of rules which are important to be known and followed:

  • Do not take photographs where one or more persons are framed as it is considered offensive especially if women are involved. This is not the case of wide open spaces such as streets,  squares and promenades where you just have to take care not to give the impression of taking a photograph exactly where one or more people are; on the contrary, in every indoor place pay attention not to frame people directly.
  • Public effusions of love are not allowed, so keep a relaxed behaviour even if you are with the sunshine of your life.
  • Alcohol is available for tourists in most hotels and a good number of restaurants outside the hotels but not in all of them, as a proper licence is mandatory.
  • Tips are greatly appreciated since service fees are rarely inclusive and show appreciation for the service received.

Once you bear in mind these simple rules and behave accordingly you will have expressed your respect for your host country and get from all around you the utmost friendliness.

Madinat Jumeirah

Must-see Places

Objectively, it is simply a very hard job to list all of the places in Dubai which cannot be missed but let’s try at least to draw up a general map of a good part of them:

  • Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world: both the spectacular round terrace At The Top on the 124th floor and the At.mosphere Restaurant on the 122nd one are definitely unique places. Moreover, the Dubai Fountain offers frp, 18:00 hrs. a marvellous water show.
  • Heritage & Diving Village on Dubai Creek in the Shindagha district: pearl diving exhibits, traditional crafts and lots of precious culture tracks. Areal step back in the past.
  • One of the four main archaeological sites Al Qusais, Al Sufooh, Jumeirah and Hatta – including also the typical watch towers which protected the city in the past against outside aggressions.
  • Burj Al Arab, the luxury sail-shaped hotel lying on a man-made island with even two heliports on its top; Madinat Jumeirah, the fascinating resort close to Burj which reproduces an ancient Arab village; Wild Wadi, the astonishing water park close to both of them.
  • Jumeirah Mosque, the most famous and impressive one in the city, though there are many other mosques – some even really small – which are equally well-worth seeing.
  • Atlantis, the Palm: this exclusive city-resort covers a whole branch of Palm Jumeirah and keeps all the magic of the ancient submarine city it is inspired to.
  • Bastakya, thehistorical district in the heart of Dubai where also the Dubai Museum is hosted in the Al Faidi Fort.
  • Dubai Marina, the charming tourist port which is a huge pedestrian zone with uncountable attractions and promenades.
  • The desert around the city where to enjoy a barbecue dinner with shisha and belly dance, sand skiing and camel rides.
  • White beaches, Beduin camps, typical souks, shopping malls, nature reserves, the Creek, Bur Dubai

Could this post ever end? Perhaps, but not your wish for a stunning stay in Dubai.

Weekend Breaks in Dubai

Dubai Sunrise

Let’s admit it: once you decide to visit Dubai you’ll do your best to stay there at least 10 days in order to discover and enjoy as much as you can in a destination which offers stunning must-see places and entertainment opportunities.

Exploring Dubai

Except during the summer months strolling in some areas of Dubai is one of the most unwinding activities one could experience there.

But even when temperature is quite high there is a place where you can enjoy fresh air and real relaxation while taking a walk: the Creek. Go along Dubai’s extremely long promenade of the Creek and discover how beneficial breeze can be for you!

Sailing vessel in Al Fahidi Square close to the Dubai Museum

It’s not a secret that climate in the Arab Emirates is very hard to face in late spring and summer: temperatures can rise up to 45-50° C in the hottest hours of the day and most of the human activities must take place indoor where every room is perfectly air-conditioned. That’s why people use exclusively their car to move from one place to another even if there is a distance of just 200 m to cover!

Well, but could you give up the unique pleasure of an evening walk? No, for sure.  So, let’s suggest you a couple of routes to be followed on foot in Dubai:

  • the Creek, already mentioned above, in the Deira District is around 5 km long and offers breathtaking views on the sea of the Arabian Gulf as well as lush vegetation, the must-see Heritage Village overlooking the crystal water, the impressive Abras and Dhows (the water taxis linking all the banks of the Creek), numberless restaurants and cafes along the promenade, and majestic hotels

Dhow on the Creek waters with the Heritage Village in the background - Dubai

  • Bastakiya, the most ancient district of Dubai where history carefully tracks your route as a visitor. Not to be missed is the Dubai Museum hosted in the imposive Al Fahidi Fort and accessible against an extremely low entrance fee. Inside you’ll be captured by the precious finds showcased along with numerous coins, maps and photographs going back to the past decades and centuries. In the same square of the Al Fahidi Fort you’ll discover a splendid vessel (yes, sailing ships in the middle of squares are  a typical UAE tradition!) sailing in a large pool (see picture above) and an impressive mosque in front of it. There is much more to discover throughtout the small lanes and the large streets of Bastakiya in terms of architecture, handicraft, traditions and customs, but wherever you’ll go you’ll enjoy the freshness of the breeze coming from the very close Creek.
  • The three Palms, the man-made archipelagos of islands opposite to Dubai’s coast and named Jebel Ali Palm on the west, Palm Jumeirah in the middle and Palm Deira on the east. Enjoying a walk on one of their immense Trunks or one of their long Branches is definitely a unique experience in terms of atmosphere, beautiful views and… freshness!

No di certo.

Dubai’s skyline by night with Burj Khalifa standing above all – Photo courtesy of Daniel Cheong

To be honest, one of the first questions I asked myself when looking down from At the Top, the round terrace overlooking Dubai from the sky (the so-called “towers’ observatory deck”) located at the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa, was: “How long does it take to get the first restaurant here in the higher levels of the Burj?”.

Burj Khalifa's making short history

It didn’t take much time, just a few months. Please let us introduce At.mosphere, the tallest restaurant in the world! There were great expectations about it – also because its atmosphere, gastronomy and service which were pre-evaluated to be of high level just like its physical location…

Well, At.mosphere opened on January, 23rd 2011 and immediately rose lots of rumours and comments all over the world. It can accommodate up to 210 people, and is structured and conceived in order to offer lunch, afternoon, pre-dinner drinks and dinner in an extensive variety of selections available.  Its gastronomy decidedly emphasises on fresh products (and healthy cooking methods) which are accompanied by a great beverage list.

It’s not surprising that we are speaking of high luxury dining so please consider the following average costs just as general ones:

  • from around Dhs450 (€ 90 – $122) per person on lunch or dinner
  • afternoon tea from around Dhs 350 (€ 70 – $ 100) per person
  • drinks & snacks in the lounge area from around Dhs 200 (€ 40 – $ 54.50) per person

Feeling like booking its private dining area for the very special upcoming event in your life? Well, then you’ll expect to pay at least Dhs 650 (€ 130 – $ 177) per person.

Though its expensive prices (but all in all not too much expensive if you consider the uniqueness of the whole product), At.mosphere is setting new, high standards in both Dubai’s dining industry and trends. So, in case your wallet will allow you, do not hesitate to book your table at At.mosphere, just 2 levels below At the Top, but please do it in real advance as it is already booked out for Valentine’s day and some other holidays!
